How much bandwidth do you really need?

The advertised gigabit figures are rarely the bottleneck. What matters is how many devices are active at the same time and what they are doing:

Guideline values for the bandwidth required in the household
HouseholdTypical usageSensible bandwidth
1 personBrowsing, email, occasional streamingfrom 100 Mbit/s
2 personsStreaming in HD, working from home, video calls200–500 Mbit/s
FamilyMultiple streams, gaming, many devices500 Mbit/s – 1 Gbit/s
Heavy users4K streams in parallel, large uploads, NASfrom 1 Gbit/s

If the internet feels slow despite a high booked bandwidth, it's usually the Wi-Fi and not the connection — the most common causes and remedies are in Wi-Fi too slow? 12 tips. For home office requirements including backup connection, see Internet for home office.

Fibre, cable or DSL?

The technology determines what is possible at your address in the first place. Fibre delivers the highest speeds and a symmetrical upload, but is not fully built out. Cable achieves high download speeds with weaker upload. DSL is the most widely available, but the slowest. The detailed comparison can be found in Fibre, cable or DSL.

Currently included in the comparison: fibre, cable. We deliberately don't include pure mobile offers (5G routers as home internet) — they're not comparable to fixed-line connections in speed and stability. Anyone who still needs to work on the go will find the options in Mobile router vs. phone hotspot.

Is the TV package still needed?

Of the 16 offers, 12 include a TV package. The surcharge is worthwhile if linear TV, live sport or replay features are used — replay features are the most common reason households stick with a TV plan despite Netflix and the like. Anyone who streams exclusively saves with a pure internet plan. What distinguishes the TV packages in detail is explained in TV plan Switzerland: replay, streaming and channels compared.

Switching and bundle discounts

When switching providers, the same rule applies as with a phone: set up the new contract with a connection date first, then cancel the old one — otherwise a gap will occur. The step-by-step process is described in Switch internet plan without interruption.

Does a bundle package of mobile and internet pay off? Sometimes — but only compared to the sum of two individually chosen offers. The calculation for this can be found in Bundle plan: is it worth it?; the mobile page is covered by the guide Best mobile plan in Switzerland from.

How this page is made

Only fixed-line offers (fibre, cable, DSL) for private households are included. Pure 5G home internet packages are deliberately excluded. Availability and the actual speed achieved depend on the address and may differ from the advertised maximum value.

handy·abo is an offer by MARKTIX AG and is financed through referral commissions. All price and service information in the tables corresponds to the collected provider data. In case of equivalent offers — i.e. with nearly identical price and scope of services — we list partner providers first; the provider highlighted as «Editorial recommendation» is an editorial assessment and not the result of a purely computational evaluation. Where the text refers to the «cheapest» plan, it always means the actually cheapest one. Details in the Affiliate disclosure.

Frequently asked questions

Internet packages in our comparison start at CHF 32.90 per month (Yallo Home Supermax). Internet only without TV starts at CHF 32.90, Combo packages with TV from CHF 37.90. We currently compare 16 offers from 5 providers.
For a two-person household with streaming and home office, 100 to 500 Mbit/s is usually sufficient. Several simultaneous 4K streams, large downloads or many devices call for 1 Gbit/s or more. Often, the booked bandwidth matters less than the quality of the WLAN in the home.
Fibre offers the highest speeds, including upload, but isn't available everywhere. Cable delivers high download rates with weaker upload. DSL is the most widespread, but the slowest. Which technology is available at your address determines the choice more than the price list.
Often yes: Many providers grant discounts if the mobile and internet plans come from the same provider. But always calculate against the sum of two separate offers from budget brands — the bundle discount isn't automatically the better deal.
Ideally, you sign the new contract before cancelling the old one, and coordinate the connection date. If there's a technology change — for example from cable to fibre — an installation may be required. Allow two to four weeks lead time.
That depends on your viewing habits. Those who watch live sports, linear TV, or replay are usually better off with a TV package. Those who only watch streaming services anyway can do without TV and choose a pure internet plan — this is generally significantly cheaper.
