Fibre, cable or DSL: Welches Internet passt zu dir?

Behind every internet plan lies one of three technologies – and which one comes out of your socket determines speed, upload, and stability more than the provider's name. Here's how to make the right choice.

The essentials at a glance

The three technologies briefly explained

The good news: fibre rollout in Switzerland is progressing quickly, and a large share of households are already connected.

Speed, upload, stability: the side-by-side comparison

Fibre, cable and DSL compared
CriterionFibre (FTTH)Kabel (HFC)DSL (copper)
DownloadSehr hoch, bis in den Multi-Gigabit-BereichHigh, often up to around 1 Gbit/sLimited, depending on line length
UploadSehr hoch, oft symmetrisch zum DownloadSignificantly lower than downloadTief
Latenz (Ping)Sehr tiefTiefMittel

VerfügbarkeitWächst stetig, v. a. Städte und AgglomerationenSehr breitPraktisch flächendeckend

For everyday use, this means: all three technologies are sufficient for browsing, streaming and email. You'll notice the differences with large uploads and downloads, with many simultaneous users in the household – and with uploads.

Almost always the download speed is advertised – yet the Upload im modernen Alltag mindestens so entscheidend.

The technology question is decided by your address – not by advertising. Here's how to find out what's available at your location:

  1. Do an address check: In Internet+TV Comparison siehst du, welche Angebote und Technologien für deine Adresse in Frage kommen.
  2. Check connections in the flat: A fibre socket (usually small, with narrow connectors), a TV cable socket, or just the telephone socket – this often already gives a hint.
  3. Verwaltung oder Vermieter fragen: Especially in multi-family buildings, fibre is sometimes laid down to the basement but not yet into every apartment – the connection can often be added later.

A common misunderstanding: The provider is not tied to its own infrastructure.

Here comes perhaps the most important insight: The price differences between the technologies are often surprisingly small. A fast fibre plan often costs about the same as a cable or DSL offer with less performance – especially with providers' regular promotional offers. So there's rarely a reason to voluntarily opt for the slower technology for price reasons.

The sensible order when choosing:

  1. Choose the best available technology: Fibre before cable before DSL – provided it's available at your address.
  2. Dimension bandwidth honestly: Medium speeds are more than enough for most households; very few need multi-gigabit.
  3. Compare providers using this technology: Same network, different prices – that's where the savings potential lies.

Three user profiles, three recommendations

If your connection is theoretically fast but the network at home is still slow, the problem is often not the line itself but the Wi-Fi – you'll find the most common causes and solutions in the article Wi-Fi too slow? 12 tips.

Conclusion: Availability beats ideology

Our recommendation

Welche Technologie du wählen kannst, entscheidet deine Adresse — welchen Anbieter, entscheidest du.

Frequently asked questions

Fibre is technically superior: higher speeds, symmetrical upload, more stable and future-proof. Cable, however, also delivers high download rates and is more than sufficient for streaming and browsing. If fibre is available at your address and similarly priced, go with fibre.
DSL via copper is the slowest of the three technologies and is only worthwhile where neither fibre nor cable is available. It's sufficient for mail, browsing and simple streaming, but quickly reaches its limits with multiple users or home office use.
The cable network was originally built for television and splits capacity asymmetrically: a lot for download, little for upload. For video calls, cloud backups and working from home, this is the biggest disadvantage compared to fibre with symmetrical speeds.
Fibre reaches a multiple of DSL speed – depending on the plan, up to the multi-gigabit range, while DSL is heavily limited depending on line length. In addition, with fibre the upload is almost as fast as the download.
