Was bedeutet Rufnummer-Portierung — und warum ist sie so einfach?

Portierung heisst: Deine bestehende Handynummer zieht mit dir zum neuen Anbieter um. In der Schweiz ist dieses Recht gesetzlich verankert — kein Anbieter darf dich daran hindern, deine Nummer mitzunehmen. Genau diese Sicherheit ist der Grund, warum die Angst vor dem Nummernverlust heute unbegründet ist: Die Nummer gehört zu dir, nicht zum Anbieter. Ob du von Swisscom zu Yallo wechselst, von Sunrise zu Wingo oder von einem Prepaid-Angebot zu einem Abo: Die Nummer bleibt dieselbe, niemand muss deine neue Nummer lernen, kein WhatsApp-Konto geht verloren.

The best part: you barely have to do anything. When signing up for the new plan, you simply indicate that you want to keep your existing number. The new provider then arranges the porting directly with your old provider — including the cancellation. The most important principle: never cancel yourself first!

The most common and costly mistake when switching: you cancel your old contract yourself before the porting has been initiated. The consequence can be drastic — läuft dein alter Vertrag aus, bevor die Nummer übertragen wurde, kann sie deaktiviert werden und ist im schlimmsten Fall weg. A number once released cannot always be reclaimed.

This is why the golden rule applies:

• Zuerst das neue Abo abschliessen und dabei die Portierung beantragen.
• The new provider cancels deinen alten Vertrag im Rahmen der Portierung — termingerecht auf das Ende deiner Kündigungsfrist.
• You yourself don't cancel anything. Only once the number has been successfully ported does the old contract end automatically.

If you've already cancelled yourself: no panic. Start the porting process as soon as possible so the transfer is completed before the contract ends. Portierung Schritt für Schritt: So läuft der Wechsel ab

So nimmst du deine Nummer in vier Schritten mit:

1. Neuen Tarif wählen: Vergleiche die aktuellen Angebote im Mobile Plan Comparison. Budget brands like Yallo, Lebara or Wingo use the same networks as the main brands, but cost significantly less.
2. Portierung beantragen: When signing up, select "port existing number" and provide your phone number as well as your current provider. Keep your customer number ready — it's on the invoice or in your customer account.
3. Wait for confirmation: The new provider coordinates the transfer with the old one and informs you of the porting date, usually via SMS or email.
4. On the porting day: Neue SIM einlegen oder eSIM aktivieren, sobald das alte Netz wegfällt. Die Umschaltung dauert nur kurz — danach läuft deine gewohnte Nummer über den neuen Anbieter.

Mehr musst du nicht tun. WhatsApp, Signal, Banking-Apps und alle Dienste, die an deine Nummer gekoppelt sind, funktionieren nach der Portierung wie gewohnt weiter — die Nummer bleibt ja dieselbe. Einzig ein Neustart des Handys am Portierungstag kann helfen, falls sich das Gerät nicht sofort im neuen Netz einbucht.

Wie lange dauert die Portierung und was kostet sie?

The porting itself is free — Gebühren für die Übernahme der Nummer sind in der Schweiz nicht üblich. Was die Dauer angeht, musst du zwei Dinge auseinanderhalten: die technische Umschaltung und den Zeitpunkt, an dem sie stattfindet. Die Umschaltung selbst ist schnell erledigt. Der Termin dafür richtet sich aber nach deinem alten Vertrag: Bist du mtl. kündbar oder ist die Mindestlaufzeit vorbei, geht es üblicherweise innerhalb der Kündigungsfrist — meist 60 Tage beziehungsweise 2 Monate. Bei Prepaid ohne Kündigungsfrist kann es deutlich schneller gehen.

Was passiert mit der Restlaufzeit meines alten Vertrags?

If you still have an ongoing minimum term, there are two ways. Either you set the porting date to the end of the minimum term — then you keep paying normally until then and switch without additional costs. Or you port earlier: then the old provider usually demands a buyout amount, often the remaining monthly fees or a contractually defined fee. Whether it's worth it is a simple calculation: if the savings from the new plan over the next months are greater than the buyout amount, the early switch is worthwhile. If in doubt, ask the old provider what the buyout amount would specifically be — the information is usually also stated in the contract terms.

Good to know: With a Preiserhöhung durch deinen Anbieter hast du meist ein Sonderkündigungsrecht und kommst vorzeitig ohne Kosten aus dem Vertrag. Und wer mtl. kündbar ist, muss ohnehin nur die Kündigungsfrist abwarten. Stelle zwei Tarife im Side-by-side gegenüber, um zu sehen, wie viel der Wechsel konkret bringt.

Prepaid-Nummer portieren: Das musst du wissen

Prepaid numbers can also be ported — for example, if you're switching from prepaid to a cheap plan. The process is the same: request porting with the new provider, don't deactivate anything yourself. There are three special points:

• SIM muss aktiv sein: An expired or deactivated prepaid SIM can no longer be ported. If in doubt, top it up with a small amount beforehand.
• Registrierung zählt: The number must be registered to you. For old SIM cards that were never registered, the provider may require proof.
• Restguthaben: Verbleibendes Prepaid-Guthaben verfällt bei der Portierung in der Regel — brauche es vorher auf, etwa durch Anrufe oder ein letztes Datenpaket.
