The essentials at a glance
- Plans almost always win from medium usage onwards: Thanks to budget brand promos, they often cost less than you'd pay for prepaid for the same service.
- With prepaid, you have volle Kostenkontrolle und keine Vertragsbindung — dafür zahlst du pro Minute und pro GB deutlich mehr.
- Affordable plans are available from around CHF 10–20 per month, many of them with no minimum term — which shrinks the old flexibility advantage of prepaid.
- What matters is your ehrlicher Datenverbrauch: first determine your profile, then choose a model, then compare plans.
Prepaid used to be considered the clearly cheaper option for the budget-conscious. Today, this picture is only partly true: budget brands like Yallo, Lebara or Wingo have pushed plan prices down sharply. With a good promo, you get a full-fledged plan from around CHF 10–20 per month — often with significantly more performance than you get with prepaid for the same money. We explain why these brands are so cheap in the article Why budget brands are often the better choice.
Kostenvergleich: Welches Modell passt zu welchem Nutzungsprofil?
The question «prepaid or plan?» can't be answered across the board — but it can be answered based on usage profile. Three things are decisive: how often you make calls, how much data you need on the go, and how regular your usage is. The following overview shows the typical profiles:
| Profile | Typical usage | Prepaid | Plan | Recommendation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Wenignutzer | Selten Anrufe, kaum mobile Daten, viel WLAN | Sehr günstig, zahlst nur bei Nutzung | Fixed costs even without usage | Prepaid |
| Normalnutzer | Tägliche Anrufe, 5–15 GB pro Monat | Data packages add up quickly | Affordable plans cover everything | Plan |
Wo genau du stehst, findest du mit unserer Anleitung How many GB do I need? heraus — dein Handy zeigt dir den effektiven Verbrauch der letzten Monate in den Einstellungen an.
- Ideal as a second SIM, emergency phone or for children
Disadvantages
- Significantly higher prices per minute and per GB
- Data packages always have to be manually repurchased
- Credit may expire after long inactivity
The plan isn't a set-and-forget deal either — it's worthwhile above all if you actually use the included service:
Advantages
- Tiefer Preis pro GB, oft unlimitierte Anrufe inklusive
- Sorglos-Paket: kein Aufladen, kein Nachkaufen, immer erreichbar
- Mit Promos oft 50–70 % Rabatt für Neukunden
- Viele Tarife sind heute monatlich kündbar
Disadvantages
- Fixed costs continue even in months with little usage
- Teils Mindestlaufzeiten von 12 oder 24 Monaten
- Credit check upon signing
- Zusatzkosten möglich, etwa beim Roaming ausserhalb des Pakets

For whom does prepaid still pay off today?
- Kinder: The built-in cost limit is the best protection against surprises. You can read what else parents should keep in mind in the guide Mobile plan for children.
- Zweit-SIM: For the holiday phone, the old device in the car, or a separate number for classified ads, prepaid is entirely sufficient.
For everyone else, the rule is: do the math before sticking with prepaid out of habit. Anyone who has used the same prepaid SIM for years and regularly tops up credit often pays more than for an affordable plan without noticing.
Warum das Abo ab mittlerer Nutzung fast immer gewinnt
The math is quickly done: as soon as you regularly need mobile data, with prepaid you keep buying data packages — and these are significantly more expensive per GB than with a plan. Anyone covering 10 GB per month via prepaid packages quickly pays more than a cheap plan with the same or better performance would cost. On top of that, plans usually include unlimited calls within Switzerland, whereas with prepaid every minute eats into your credit.
The second reason is the Promo-Aktionen: Swiss providers compete for plan customers almost exclusively through new-customer discounts — with prepaid, such promotions are rare. And the third reason: many affordable plans today are monthly cancellable. This practically eliminates the strongest prepaid argument, flexibility.

So entscheidest du dich richtig
Proceed in three steps:
For getting started without a long commitment, it's worth taking a look at Plans with no minimum term; which plan size fits your usage is clarified by the Plan comparison. Background on the provider: Yallo review.
