Mobile phone insurance: sinnvoll oder rausgeworfenes Geld?

When buying a new phone, you're almost always offered insurance – in the shop, at checkout, online. Whether it's worth it depends on the premium, the deductible and, above all, the fine print. We do the honest math.

The essentials at a glance

  • Mobile insurance often costs, depending on the device value, CHF 5–15 per month – über zwei Jahre kommen schnell mehrere hundert Franken zusammen.
  • Almost always, there's also an additional Selbstbehalt pro Schadenfall, and many policies only reimburse the Zeitwert, not the new price.
  • Most people are well served with Case, tempered glass and your own reserve fund günstiger – das Geld bleibt bei dir statt bei der Versicherung.

Was kostet eine Handyversicherung – und was bekommst du dafür?

The premium depends on the device value: for a mid-range phone you often pay around CHF 5–10 per month, for a flagship rather CHF 10–15.. That sounds like little, but it adds up: over a typical usage period of two years, that's schnell CHF 150–350 – nur an Prämien.

In addition there's the Selbstbehalt: With almost all policies, you pay an excess per claim, often between CHF 50 and 200. Add that up before you sign. A screen repair often costs CHF 200–400 depending on the model – if you've paid two years of premiums plus the excess, in many cases you'll hardly have come out cheaper than if you'd paid for the repair directly out of your own pocket.

The insurance only pays off financially if a larger claim actually occurs – and that's exactly what providers bet on: most customers never file a claim.

Zeitwert statt Neupreis: die Klausel, die alles ändert

The most important thing to check in the fine print is the Compensation rule. Many policies don't cover the replacement price, only the Zeitwert – also den aktuellen Restwert deines Geräts.

Was deckt die Hausratversicherung beim Handy schon ab?

Before taking out a separate phone insurance, it's worth checking your Household contents policy – dein Handy gehört zum Hausrat. Standardmässig gedeckt sind in der Regel Fire, water damage at your place of residence and burglary.

Spannend wird der Zusatzbaustein «einfacher Diebstahl auswärts»: This means your phone is also insured if it's stolen while you're out and about – at a café, on the train, at the beach. This add-on usually costs significantly less than a standalone mobile insurance policy and covers all the household contents you're carrying at once, including your laptop or bike accessories.

For whom does phone insurance really pay off?

There are profiles where the maths can work out – and many where it almost never does:

In favour

  • You have a teures Neugerät (flagship), whose repair really costs money
  • You use the phone viel draussen – Baustelle, Sport, unterwegs mit Kindern
  • You've already had a phone break several times
  • A sudden replacement purchase would put your seriously strain your budget

Against

  • Common exclusions: loss, gross negligence
  • Household contents insurance often already covers theft
  • With mid-range devices, the Neukauf kaum teurer als Prämien + Selbstbehalt

StrategyKosten (grob)CoversSuitable for
Phone insuranceCHF 5–15/month + deductibleSturz, Bruch, meist Diebstahl (oft nur Zeitwert)Teure Neugeräte, Vielnutzer draussen
Household contents + add-on «theft away from home»Kleiner Prämienzuschlag pro JahrTheft at home and on the go – no screen breakageAnyone worried about theft, city dwellers, commuters
Own reservez.B. CHF 10/Monat aufs SparkontoEverything – you decide yourself about repair or replacementDisciplined savers, mid-range devices
Case + tempered glassOne-time, approx. CHF 30–60Verhindert viele Schäden, statt sie zu ersetzenEveryone – the basis for every device

The strategies aren't mutually exclusive: a case and tempered glass are always worthwhile, the reserve fund costs nothing extra – and insurance remains the special case.

The affordable alternatives: prevention and reserves

The best «insurance» is the one that prevents the damage: a solid Case with raised edge plus tempered glass kostet einmalig CHF 30–60 und fängt die häufigsten Stürze ab.

Set aside the amount you'd pay for the insurance every month. If nothing happens, the money is yours – after two years that's CHF 120–360, you can put towards your next device. If something does happen, you pay for the repair out of that, without any excess discussion or deduction for depreciation.

Und drittens: Kaufe dein Gerät bewusst. Wer das Handy separat und eine Generation älter kauft, statt das neuste Flaggschiff im Bundle zu finanzieren, senkt das versicherte Risiko gleich mit – wie das rechnerisch aussieht, zeigt unser Vergleich Plan with phone or SIM-only. Unser ehrliches Fazit zur Handyversicherung

For the meisten Nutzerinnen und Nutzer ist die Handyversicherung verzichtbar: Premiums, deductibles and depreciated-value reimbursement eat up the benefit, and the most common annoyances – losing the phone, scratches, battery wear – aren't covered anyway. A case, tempered glass, the household contents add-on for theft and a small reserve cover the risk more cheaply.

Vergleiche die aktuellen Angebote im Mobile Plan Comparison – oder hol dir eine free advice, if you're unsure which plan suits you.

Frequently asked questions

For most people, it doesn't pay off: over two years, premiums and excess often reach the cost of a repair, and many policies only reimburse the current value. It makes sense mainly for expensive new devices in the first one to two years and for people who expose their phone heavily at work or in private life.
A good case with tempered glass prevents the most common damage for a one-time cost of CHF 30–60.. Add to that your own reserve fund: if you set aside the premium amount monthly, you'll have money for repairs if something happens — and keep it if nothing does.
