Netzabdeckung prüfen: So testest du, bevor du unterschreibst

The cheapest plan is useless if you have no reception at home. With coverage maps, a prepaid test, and a few targeted questions, you can find out within a few days which network actually works in your locations.

The essentials at a glance

  • All three Swiss networks (Swisscom, Sunrise, Salt) are well developed — entscheidend ist der Empfang an deinen Orten: Home, workplace, commute.
  • The most reliable test: a günstige Prepaid-SIM im Zielnetz ein paar Tage im Alltag nutzen.
  • Zweitmarken funken im Netz der Mutter: Yallo und Lebara im Sunrise-Netz, Wingo im Swisscom-Netz, Post Mobile im Salt-Netz.
  • For weak reception in the apartment, a WiFi calling — Anrufe laufen dann übers Heim-WLAN statt übers Mobilfunknetz.

When comparing plans, most people look first at price and data allowance — understandable. But the most important question comes before that: Does the network work where you spend your everyday life? A plan with a minimum term often binds you for 12 or 24 months. If you only notice after switching that you have no reception in your home office, you're stuck with the problem for a long time.

The good news: Switzerland has three very well-developed networks from Swisscom, Sunrise and Salt. In cities and agglomerations you'll barely have any problems with any of the three. Differences show up mainly in rural areas, in the mountains, and in buildings with thick walls — which is exactly why the individual check is worthwhile. You can read the detailed strengths of the three networks in our comparison Best mobile network in Switzerland.

How to read provider coverage maps correctly

Test at your locations: home, workplace, commute route

  1. Wohnung: Teste in allen Räumen, in denen du telefonierst und surfst — besonders Schlafzimmer, Homeoffice und Balkon. Ein Balken Unterschied zwischen Wohnzimmer und Büroecke ist normal.
  2. Workplace: Open-plan offices in modern buildings are often dead zones due to metal façades and coated windows. Ask colleagues which provider gets reception at your workplace.

The simplest experience value costs nothing: Ask neighbours, family and colleagues, which network they use and how satisfied they are. Someone who lives in the same building or sits in the same office gives you more reliable data than any map.

The prepaid trick: test the network for a few francs in everyday use

The most reliable network test is a real practical test — and it's surprisingly cheap. Buy yourself a Prepaid-SIM eines Anbieters im Zielnetz (at the kiosk, in the shop or online) and use it for a week in everyday life: calling, browsing, streaming, at all your locations.

Here's how to proceed:

Wichtig: Es zählt das Network, not the brand. A prepaid SIM from Yallo tests the Sunrise network, one from Wingo tests the Swisscom network. Our comparison explains what else prepaid can do and when a plan is more worthwhile Prepaid or plan.

Indoor-Empfang schwach? WLAN-Calling ist die Lösung

A common scenario: full reception outside, barely a bar inside the apartment. Building materials are usually to blame — reinforced concrete, metal facades and modern insulated glazing strongly dampen mobile signals. Before you rule out the provider because of this, check whether WiFi calling (also called Wi-Fi Calling or VoWiFi) solves the problem.

Welche Marke funkt in welchem Netz?

Swiss mobile brands and their networks
BrandNetworkTypisches Profil
SwisscomSwisscomMain brand, premium service, stores
WingoSwisscomOnline-Zweitmarke, günstige Promos
SunriseSunriseMain brand, bundle offers
YalloSunrisePreisaggressive Zweitmarke
LebaraSunriseZweitmarke, stark bei Auslandsanrufen
SaltSaltMain brand, often attractive promotions
Post MobileSaltZweitmarke der Post

Specifically this means: if Sunrise has the best reception for you, you'll usually get the same coverage with Yallo or Lebara much cheaper. Why this is the case and where the differences lie is shown in our article about Budget brands in Switzerland. We have also tested the individual providers in detail — for example in the Yallo test and in Wingo test.

Checklist: Find the right network in 5 steps

So bringst du alles zusammen:

  1. Karten checken: Enter the address of your home and workplace into the coverage maps of all three networks, ruling out obvious gaps.
  3. Prepaid-Test machen: If the situation is unclear, run a cheap prepaid SIM in your preferred network for a week in everyday use.
  5. Tarife im Zielnetz vergleichen: Only decide on price now — within the Mobile Plan Comparison filterst du gezielt nach Netz und findest die aktuell besten Angebote, inklusive der Zweitmarken.

Unsere Empfehlung ist Yallo: the same network coverage, a significantly lower price — and unlimited data, EU roaming, 5G as well as eSIM in every plan.

The classification is found in Yallo review, the right plan size in our Buying guide by user type.

Frequently asked questions

Enter your address into the coverage maps of Swisscom, Sunrise and Salt — they show the 4G and 5G coverage at your location. For a realistic picture, supplement this with feedback from neighbours and a practical test with a prepaid SIM, since the maps mainly show outdoor coverage.
All three networks — Swisscom, Sunrise and Salt — perform very well in network tests, with small differences between them. In cities, the differences are barely noticeable; in rural and mountain areas, a different network may lead depending on the region. What matters is the reception at your personal locations.
