The essentials at a glance

  • Dual-SIM means: zwei SIM-Profile gleichzeitig aktiv – heute meist als Kombination aus physischer SIM und eSIM, newer devices can also run two eSIMs in parallel.
  • The three most common use cases: Separate work and private, CH plan plus international eSIM auf Reisen und günstiges Daten-Abo neben der alten Nummer.
  • You're on beiden Nummern gleichzeitig erreichbar; mobile data always runs over one of the two lines, which you choose freely.
  • Almost all current iPhones and Android flagships support dual-SIM – eSIM-Fähigkeit ist der Schlüssel.

Dual-SIM means your phone zwei SIM-Profile gleichzeitig betreibt: zwei Nummern, zwei Tarife, ein Gerät. Früher brauchte es dafür zwei physische SIM-Schächte – heute läuft die zweite Leitung fast immer als eSIM, i.e. as a permanently built-in, digitally writable SIM profile. What an eSIM exactly is and which Swiss providers support it is explained in detail in the guide eSIM in Switzerland.

In everyday life, dual SIM means: you're on beiden Nummern gleichzeitig erreichbar und siehst bei jedem Anruf, auf welcher Leitung er reinkommt. Beim Telefonieren und Simsen wählst du pro Kontakt oder pro Anruf, welche Nummer du verwendest. Mobile Data always runs over one of the two SIMs – welche, legst du in den Einstellungen fest und kannst es jederzeit umschalten. Moderne iPhones erlauben inzwischen sogar zwei aktive eSIMs parallel, without any physical card at all.

Wofür lohnt sich Dual-SIM? Die drei häufigsten Use-Cases

Three scenarios make up the bulk of dual-SIM usage:

Welche Handys unterstützen Dual-SIM?

The good news: Almost every current smartphone can do dual-SIM. At Apple, all iPhones since the iPhone XS/XR support Dual-SIM (physical SIM + eSIM), newer models can even run two eSIMs simultaneously. On Android, flagship and many mid-range devices from Samsung, Google and others offer either eSIM plus physische SIM oder klassisch zwei Nano-SIM-Schächte.

What you should look out for:

Switching devices is a bit more involved with an eSIM than with a physical card: the profile has to be transferred to the new phone or reissued – with most providers this can now be done directly in the app.

Setting up dual-SIM: step by step

Setup takes only a few minutes:

  1. Zweite SIM aktivieren: Physische SIM einlegen oder eSIM per QR-Code bzw. Anbieter-App aufs Gerät laden.
  2. Leitungen benennen: Give both SIMs descriptive names like «Personal», «Business» or «Travel» – this will save you confusion later.
  5. Roaming pro SIM prüfen: Data roaming can be switched on and off separately for each SIM. Be sure to check before traveling so the expensive line doesn't accidentally end up browsing abroad.

Dual-SIM combinations by use case
Use-CaseSIM 1SIM 2What to look out for
Work & privatePrivates AboBusiness number (often provided by the employer)Richtige Leitung pro Kontakt hinterlegen
Reisen & FernwehCH plan (staying reachable)Reise- oder Lokal-eSIM für DatenDisable data roaming on the CH SIM
Surf cheaply, keep your numberOld number on a mini plan/prepaidZweitmarken-Abo mit viel DatenData over SIM 2, calls over SIM 1
Cross-border commutersCH plan with roaming allowanceLokale SIM/eSIM im NachbarlandCheck automatic network selection near the border

The third option in particular is an underrated money-saving trick: instead of porting the number, you simply run the existing and the new plan in parallel.

Dual-SIM opens up a savings strategy that isn't possible with a single SIM: You combine two cheap plans instead of paying for one expensive all-rounder. A data-heavy plan from a budget brand for browsing plus a very small plan for reachability on the old number together often costs less than a single premium plan – with the same network quality, because Budget brands like Yallo or Wingo funken in denselben drei Schweizer Netzen wie die Hauptmarken.

Limits and pitfalls of Dual-SIM

Dual-SIM is mature, but there are a few points you should know.

Dual-SIM relies on eSIM — without it, swapping quickly becomes tedious. Our recommendation is Yallo, because eSIM is included with every plan there, along with unlimited data, EU roaming and 5G.

Frequently asked questions

All iPhones since the iPhone XS/XR as well as most current Android devices from Samsung, Google and other manufacturers. The combination of physical SIM and eSIM is common; newer iPhones can even run two eSIMs simultaneously.
A bit, because the phone maintains two network connections at the same time. In everyday use, however, the extra consumption on modern devices is minimal. Anyone wanting to save can temporarily deactivate one of the two lines, for example the travel eSIM at home.
The function itself costs nothing – you only pay for the two plans. It becomes affordable with a data-heavy budget brand plan plus a mini plan or prepaid for the second number; together often from around CHF 20–30 per month.
