The essentials at a glance
- The laptop behaves at the hotspot just as it does on home Wi-Fi: Updates und Cloud-Syncs können unbemerkt mehrere GB verbrauchen.
- USB-Tethering: Phone connected to the laptop via cable — the most stable connection, and the phone gets charged at the same time.
You don't need a separate device: every modern smartphone supports all three variants out of the box. What matters isn't the technology but your plan — more on that shortly.
Setting up a hotspot: how to do it on iPhone and Android
Setup is done in a few steps on both systems:
- iPhone: Settings → Personal Hotspot → enable "Allow Others to Join". You can change the Wi-Fi password directly below that.
- Android: Settings → Network & Internet → Hotspot & tethering → turn on Wi-Fi hotspot. You set the name and password in the same menu.
Then you connect the laptop like any other WiFi network: select the network, enter the password, done. On the iPhone it's even faster if both devices are signed in with the same Apple ID: then the hotspot appears automatically in the Mac's WiFi menu, without entering a password at all. Android offers a similar convenience feature for linked devices called "Instant Tethering". Three practical tips for everyday use:
- For long work sessions, USB-Tethering die bessere Wahl: stabiler und ohne Akku-Verlust.
The hotspot itself doesn't consume anything — but the laptop behind it does, all the more. The tricky part: your notebook behaves at the hotspot just as it does on home Wi-Fi, happily downloading system updates, cloud backups and app updates. These guideline values help with planning:
| Activity on the laptop | Consumption per hour |
|---|---|
| Emails & office work | approx. 50–200 MB |
| Surfen & Recherche | approx. 100–300 MB |
| Videocall in HD | approx. 1–2 GB |
| Video-Streaming in HD | approx. 1–3 GB |
How to realistically assess your needs is shown in our guide How many GB do I need?
Good news: With the vast majority of Swiss mobile plans, tethering ohne Aufpreis erlaubt und zählt einfach zum normalen Datenvolumen.
- Some unlimited plans begrenzen die Hotspot-Nutzung separat: unlimited on the phone, but only a certain GB amount at full speed for shared connections.
- After that, it's often gedrosselt statt gesperrt — für E-Mails reicht das, für Videocalls nicht.
- The decisive keywords in the fine print are «Tethering», «Hotspot» oder «Datenweitergabe».
- With plans that have a fixed data package, this special rule practically never applies — there, every GB simply counts.

Battery tips: How to make your phone last longer as a hotspot
The hotspot is one of the biggest battery drains of all: the phone connects to the mobile network while simultaneously running its own Wi-Fi. These measures will help you get through the workday:
- Hotspot ausschalten, wenn du ihn nicht brauchst, instead of letting it run all day.
Hotspot not working? The most common problems and solutions
- Hotspot not showing up: On the iPhone, the "Personal Hotspot" menu must stay open for the network to be visible to new devices. On Android, it helps to switch the hotspot off and on again once.
If nothing helps, the classic trick works: restart both devices and remove and set up the WiFi connection on the laptop again.
For occasional use — on the train, at a café, when WLAN fails — the phone hotspot is unbeatable: free, always with you, ready instantly. But as soon as you regelmässig darüber arbeitest oder streamst, stösst das Konzept an Grenzen: Das Datenpaket ist schnell leer, der Akku leidet, und während des Tetherings ist dein Handy an den Arbeitsplatz gebunden.
Then there are two options: first, a Unlimited-Tarif, with which you save yourself the GB-counting — in Switzerland, thanks to promotional offers, often available from around CHF 20 per month.
