Mobile plan for families: Rabatte und Multi-SIM clever nutzen

Vier Personen, vier Abos — da läppert sich schnell ein dreistelliger Betrag pro Monat zusammen. Familienrabatte versprechen Abhilfe, doch oft fahren Familien mit einzelnen Zweitmarken-Promos günstiger. Wir zeigen beide Wege, mit Beispielrechnung.

The essentials at a glance

  • The major providers lure with family discounts and discounted additional SIMs — je mehr Abos im Haushalt, desto höher der Rabatt pro Linie.
  • Always calculate the Total costs per month across all people — nicht den Rabattprozentsatz.
  • A jährlicher Familien-Abo-Check lohnt sich: Promos ändern laufend, Wechseln ist dank Portierung einfach.

Was Familien beim Handy-Abo wirklich brauchen

A family isn't a single user times four — needs vary widely. The parents might need a lot of data allowance for commuting and roaming for business trips, the older child streams and games, the younger one mainly needs reachability. This is exactly where one-size-fits-all solutions fail: whoever gets the same large plan for everyone pays for performance that three out of four people never use.

The first step is therefore an honest needs analysis per person: how much data does each person really need? Who calls a lot, who only uses messengers? You'll find instructions on how to read and estimate actual usage in the guide How many GB do I need?. Only once the profiles are clear does it make sense to look at discount models — otherwise you're optimising past your actual needs.

In addition there's the network question: all the family's plans should work where you live, work, and go to school. Switzerland has three well-developed networks with Swisscom, Sunrise, and Salt, with differences mainly in rural areas and inside buildings. Check the reception at your locations before committing — especially if the whole family is going with the same provider, a wrong choice weighs four times as much.

Family discounts and additional SIM: how the models work

The advantages: everything on one bill, one point of contact, often combinable with home internet and TV.

The alternative: everyone on budget brand promos

The second approach dispenses with family logic and optimises each line individually: each family member gets the aktuell besten Promo-Tarif einer Zweitmarke — Yallo oder Lebara im Sunrise-Netz, Wingo im Swisscom-Netz, Post Mobile im Salt-Netz.

The result surprises many: four individual promo plans combined are often cheaper than four discounted main-brand plans — with the same network quality. Our overview explains why this model works and what you need to watch out for regarding service and contract terms Yallo, Wingo & Co. sowie die einzelnen Anbieter-Tests, etwa der Yallo test.

The downside: several invoices, several customer accounts, and the best promos often apply only to new customers. If you want to avoid the administrative hassle, you pay for convenience with the family discount — that's legitimate, but it should be a conscious decision.

A middle ground also works, by the way: the parents stay with the main brand for the bundle discount or service, while the children run on affordable budget-brand plans. This way you use the discount where it counts, and the promos where the need is small. With promotional plans, watch out for the minimum term: many promotions bind you for 12 or 24 months — for children, whose needs grow quickly, a no-minimum-term plan can be the better choice.

Example calculation: family of 4

Family setup: main brand with discount vs. budget brand promos (rough figures)
PersonRequirementMain brand with family discountZweitmarken-Promo
Parent 1Viel Daten, Roamingab rund CHF 60–80ab rund CHF 25–40
Parent 2Mittlere Nutzungab rund CHF 40–60 (rabattiert)ab rund CHF 15–25
TeenagerStreaming, Social Mediaab rund CHF 30–50 (rabattiert)ab rund CHF 15–25
KindReachability, little dataab rund CHF 20–30 (Kids-SIM)ab rund CHF 10–20

For a child's first phone, the rule is: start small.

We cover the topic in detail — including the age question and child protection — in the guide Mobile plan for children.

You'll find the optimal family setup in four steps:

  1. Clarify needs per person: Data allowance, roaming, calls — honestly and based on actual usage.
  2. Netz festlegen: The best deal is useless without reception at home and at school or at work respectively.
  3. Both models calculate: Total family discount with the desired provider vs. sum of the best individual promos. In Side-by-side stellst du Tarife direkt nebeneinander.

To the provider: Yallo review.

Frequently asked questions

It depends on the bill. Family discounts noticeably lower the prices of the main brands — nevertheless, the sum of individual budget-brand promos for all family members is often cheaper, with the same network quality. Always calculate the total monthly cost across all people, not the discount percentage.
A cheap plan with a fixed data allowance, blocked roaming and third-party provider block. The limit acts as a cost brake: once the allowance is used up, speed is throttled instead of extra charges. A child doesn't need unlimited data — plans around CHF 10 to 20 per month are usually completely sufficient.
An additional SIM is an extra SIM card alongside the main plan, usually at a reduced price with a smaller scope of services. It's worth it for children or secondary devices if you already have a main-brand plan. But always compare the price with standalone cheap plans from budget brands.
Ja.
